Bournemouth is Britain’s HAIRLESS hotspot, with more hair removal clinics per capita than any other area
- A new study reveals that Bournemouth residents are more diligent with removing body hair than any other area in the United Kingdom, with the highest concentration of hair removal clinics in the nation
- Chelmsford and Peterborough follow closely behind, while Swansea comes in last with only one hair removal studio in the whole city
- The study was conducted analysed the number of beauty clinics in 82 major towns and cities across the UK and identified which areas had the highest concentration of particular beauty services
New data released by beauty and wellness marketplace Fresha reveals that Bournemouth is the smooth-skin capital of the UK, with an impressive 58 hair removal clinics located across the seaside town.
The study counted the number of hair removal salons across all UK areas with a population of at least 100,000 and scaled this against local populations to get a studio count per 100,000 local residents.
The data revealed that Bournemouth has an impressive 29.5 hair removal studios per 100,000 residents (100k), over 160% above the national average of 11.35 salons per 100k.
Whether they’re into threading, waxing, or laser hair removal, there is no shortage of hair removal specialists to help Bournemouth residents remove unwanted hair.
After Bournemouth, there are plenty of British towns and cities keen to achieve a smoother look. Chelmsford is second on the list, with 22.2 hair removal studios per 100k residents.
In total, the southern town has 26 hair removal studios, which is 96% above the national average (11.4 per 110k) when considering their population size.
Peterborough is next in line, with 21.5 hair removal studios per 100k residents, putting 90% above the national average.
Blackpool, which also has the highest number of beauty salons in the UK, is fourth for hair removal with 19.5 hair removal studios per 100k residents. The popular seaside resort has 29 hair removal studios, so there is plenty of choice for those wanting to remove unwanted body hair.
Rounding out the top five is Cheltenham, with 19 hair removal studios per 100k residents, meaning attendees of the Cheltenham Festival have plenty of choices when it comes to self-maintenance.
Some of the UK’s biggest cities, such as London, Birmingham, and Leeds, are notably absent from the top ten. Perhaps residents of these major population hubs prefer the natural look.
Hair removal seems more popular in smaller towns and coastal cities, with the top ten list dominated by these areas. This could suggest that residents in these towns and cities are more interested in personal grooming, or perhaps they have more disposable income.

The findings also highlight the UK cities and towns with the fewest options for those interested in hair removal, with the south Wales city of Swansea in the lead.
Residents of Swansea only have one hair removal studio to choose from, which translates as just 0.59 hair removal studios per 100k. This is 95% below the national average, suggesting Swansea locals are less motivated to pursue the hairless look.
After Swansea comes Gateshead, with only 1.73 hair removal studios per 100k population. The northern town has only two hair removal studios, putting it 85% below the national average when considering its population size.
Basildon is in third place with just 3.45 hair removal clinics per 100k—70% below the national average. In fourth place is York, located in the north of England, with 3.89 hair removal studios per 100k—equating to just six hair removal studios in the city.
Coming in fifth place is the seaside town of Brighton, known for its vibrant culture and popular beach. However, when it comes to hair removal services, Brighton residents only have access to 4 clinics per 100k population—65% below the national average.

A spokesperson for Fresha commented on the findings: “These findings highlight some interesting trends in hair removal across the UK. It seems that in areas like Bournemouth and Chelmsford, there is a significant demand for hair removal services, perhaps due to local preferences for a more polished appearance.
“In areas with fewer hair removal studios, such as Swansea and Gateshead, there could be untapped potential for beauty entrepreneurs to introduce more professional hair removal services.
“Residents in these regions might appreciate having more local options for hair removal, making it a promising opportunity for business expansion.”
