Experts predict this surprisingly unisex baby name will be popular this autumn

  • A new study has predicted which baby names celebrities such as Logan Paul, Margot Robbie, and Henry Cavill may use this autumn
  • The surprisingly unisex name Jack, has been determined the most anticipated autumn baby name, relating to Halloween jack-o-lanterns
  • Asher and Scarlett rank second and third, associated with Thanksgiving and the seasonal colour change, respectively

A new study has predicted the top baby names expecting celebrities could use this autumn, with Jack anticipated to be the most popular.

Experts at Hennessey Digital analysed Social Security Administration (SSA) data to find which autumn-related baby names were the most used in the U.S. in 2023.

Jack places first, with 8,696 babies receiving the name in the U.S. last year. Jack may relate to the frequent use of jack-o-lanterns during Halloween. The name was bestowed upon 8,683 baby boys, but 13 baby girls also received the name in 2023, making it unisex.

Second is Asher, as the name was given to newborns 7,933 times in the U.S. last year. Asher holds the meaning of ‘blessed’, which relates to Thanksgiving.

Scarlett is third, with 6,294 U.S. newborns bestowed the name in 2023. Since nature witnesses a change to deep and warm colours during autumn, Scarlett reflects the season’s vibrancy.

In fourth place is Hazel, with 6,178 U.S. babies given the name in 2023. Autumn sees the harvest of hazelnuts, making Hazel a suitable name for the season.

At number five is Rowan, as 5,480 babies born in U.S. received the name in 2023. Rowan trees stand out during the season as they produce bright red berries.

The most popular autumn-related baby names used in 2023

Rank Baby Name Total Babies Given the Name in 2023
1 Jack 8,696
2 Asher 7,933
3 Scarlett 6,294
4 Hazel 6,178
5 Rowan 5,480
6 Ivy 5,059
7 Willow 4,773
8 Paisley 3,732
9 Adam 3,474
10 Hunter 3,454

Ivy is sixth, with 5,059 U.S. babies bestowed the name in 2023. Most plants and trees change colour during the autumn, but not ivy, making it one of the season’s most unique and identifiable plants.

Willow placed seventh, as 4,773 newborns received the name in the U.S. during 2023. The willow tree experiences a significant colour change in the autumn, making it a standout marker of the season.

Eighth is Paisley, as 3,732 babies were given the name in the U.S. during 2023. For many, the autumn celebration of Thanksgiving is a time to thank God for the year’s harvest and blessings.

Paisley, which means ‘church’ in its Scottish origin, reflects the holiday’s spiritual significance well.

At nine is Adam, with 3,474 newborns identified with the name in 2023. Adam derives from the Hebrew name Adamah, which translates to ‘Earth’. The Earth is central to the season due to transitions in daylight hours and leaves starting to autumn.

Hunter takes the tenth spot, with 3,454 U.S. newborns given the name in 2023. U.S. hunting season begins in the autumn, making Hunter a suitable name for the time.

Jason Hennessey, CEO of Hennessey Digital, commented on the findings: “It is fascinating to see some of the lesser-known meanings of popular names and how they relate to the autumn season.

“Seeing traditional names such as Jack becoming unisex in modern times is surprising. We wonder what other popular names will soon be redefined and transcend sexes.

“With celebrities such as Logan Paul, Margot Robbie, and Henry Cavill expecting with their partners, it will be interesting to see if they pick any of the names in the ranking for their little ones. Jack could be ideal for Logan Paul in particular, who is expecting a baby girl with his fiancée Nina Agdal this Autumn.”
