Greater London is no stranger to dimly-lit streets, with a whopping 9 boroughs making it into Great Britain’s top 10 darkest places! Tower Hamlets and Hackney make up the top 3, with 339 and 429 street lights per 10,000 people respectively. In recent years, the Centre for London has called for residential street lighting to be improved. Most recently, all boroughs have upgraded their street lights to LED, however, as these upgrades are focused on road lighting, pedestrian areas have been neglected. Although London’s streets are getting greener, it might be time for a little more glow on those walkways!
Norwich is officially the dimmest city in Great Britain when it comes to street lighting, boasting just 175 street lights per 10,000 people. In an attempt to be more eco-friendly, Norwich and Norfolk county have been on a mission to reduce the number of street lighting units – so far this move has saved the county a staggering £1.4M and reduced carbon emissions by 7,500 tonnes!
